Lesson #4: Chords

The final step to learning the basics of the guitar is the chords. I'm only going to teach you the main major chords, which are A maj, B maj, C maj, D maj, E maj, F maj, and G maj.

  • The numbers indicate which fingers you should use to hold down the strings.

1. index finger; 2. middle finger; 3. ring finger; and 4. pinky

  • The vertical lines indicate the strings on the guitar. The one to the far left is the low E string and the one to the far right is the high E string. Starting from the far left, the strings are: low E, A, D, G, B, high E.
  • The horizontal lines represent the fret in which your finger should be in. Starting from the bold black line, it goes Fret 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. Most of the major chords won't go past the 4th fret.
  • The "x" that is located above a string means you mute the string. To do so, you can either not play the string, or if you can reach, place your thumb over the string, but only placing a slight pressure on it so that it doesn't create any sound.
  • The "o" on top of a string means that it is played open, meaning you play the string as a part of the chord.
  • When playing the chords, try to keep your fingers as close to the marker separating the frets. This will allow for a cleaner sound.

This is how each chord should sound (if it does not sound like these, try moving your finger closer to the fret)

A maj
B maj

C maj
D maj

E maj
F maj

G maj

Memorizing the chords will come as you practice. Once you learn the chords, you can learn how to play a majority of songs because most songs consist of only three or four chords. The most common chords you will see are C maj, D maj, and G maj. So, go ahead, try looking up some music sheets of your favorite songs and try playing it. You'll be surprised of how easy it is once you learn these basics. Of course there are going to be some chords that you may not know, but usually the sheets will include chord diagrams, so just follow the steps above and you'll be able to play any chord you come across.
